the strangest thing happened today. as i was crossing the bridge towards NP, a guy came up to me and said he needed to tell me something. So i took off my headphones, and in an almost shy voice, he said 'thank you for being so beautiful'.
i know im not beautiful. i am no eva longoria, nicole kidman nor angelina jolie. im not floating to the moon at the compliment because well, it might just all be a dare, or gotcha! it got me thinking though. how a simple comment can catch me and hold me down in that moment as his eyes met mine. what was displayed is a kind of courage, honesty and spontanity which few singaporeans, or asians for that matter, embodied. how many times have i held myself back from asking an old woman about her day as she tucked herself awkwardly among her mountain of shopping bags on a crowded bus? when was the last time i smile at a stranger when our eyes met? when was the last time i played and teased with a toddler in a pram, or stroke a baby's hair on the train? or when was the last time i dare tell someone how wonderful he or she is?
i want to have that kind of courage to tell my dad and mom who wonderful i think they are.
we always hold back our appreciation for people. in our insecurities have we become too scared to say ' you're great' because inside our hearts it would mean ' you're greater, than me' ?
ok, i know that wasnt really that relevant to the source of my inspiration but oh, how little things like this to think about throughout the day keeps me thankful and filled with peace :) .
